Bento Stir-Fried Cabbage

High heat and a short cook keep cabbage from turning mushy overnight.

Steps

How to make it

Prep 6 min · Cook 8 min

  1. Wash cabbage (250 g), cut into about 3 cm chunks, and drain well; slice garlic (3 cloves).
  2. Heat olive oil (1 tbsp) over medium-high; add garlic and sizzle about 20 seconds until lightly golden (do not burn).
  3. Add cabbage and stir-fry over high heat 2 minutes until leaves soften slightly but stay crisp.
  4. Add water (2 tbsp), cover 1 minute to steam, then uncover and stir-fry over high heat until tender-crisp with crisp edges.
  5. Season with a pinch of salt, taste, and cool completely before packing in bento boxes.

Tips & storage

Make it easier

  • Add shredded carrot for color.
  • Spread chilled rice or cooked noodles before cooking so they separate instead of clumping and take on sauce evenly.

Refrigerate up to 2 days; microwave about 40 seconds.

FAQ

Can I use bok choy instead?

Yes—shorten the cook to about 3 minutes total.

Can I prepare this ahead of time?

Yes. Refrigerate the cooked starch and toppings separately, then reheat and combine just before serving for better texture.
