Budget Tofu Rice Bowl

Tofu is cheap and protein-rich—sear until golden and glaze with soy for a classic rice bowl.

Steps

How to make it

Prep 6 min · Cook 10 min

  1. Spoon cooked rice (1 bowl) into a serving bowl; cut tofu (1 block) into about 2 cm thick slices and press dry on both sides with paper towels. Chop scallion (1 stalk).
  2. Heat olive oil (1 tsp) over medium heat in a skillet; lay tofu in a single layer and pan-fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden and lightly crisp.
  3. Drizzle soy sauce (2 tbsp) along the pan edge and swirl to coat tofu evenly; turn off heat and sprinkle white sesame seeds (1 tsp) and scallions.
  4. Place tofu with a little sauce over the rice and serve.

Tips & storage

Make it easier

  • Add a fried egg for extra fullness.
  • Spread chilled rice or cooked noodles before cooking so they separate instead of clumping and take on sauce evenly.

Best fresh; tofu texture fades overnight.

FAQ

Can I use soft tofu?

Firm block tofu is best; soft breaks apart; extra-firm needs thinner slices.

Can I prepare this ahead of time?

Yes. Refrigerate the cooked starch and toppings separately, then reheat and combine just before serving for better texture.
